(February 16, 2022) – Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos Jr. knows where his family hid the ill-gotten wealth they obtained during his father’s dictatorship since he’s a beneficiary of the assets, a former commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) said on Tuesday.
Atty. Ruben Carranza said Marcos, the standard-bearer of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas in the 2022 elections, “holds the key” to this critical information. But Carranza noted that the judgment of tax professionals, accountants, and lawyers are important as well to support the argument that the numerous assets were indeed taken through illicit means.
“Siya (Marcos) ‘yung may hawak ng susi roon sa kung saan tinatago ang ill-gotten wealth. Kung hindi man siya mismo ang diktador, siya ‘yung may hawak ng susi na iniwan sa kanya ng tatay niyang diktador,” said Carranza on One News’ The Chiefs.
Ex-PCGG commissioner: Marcos Jr. is a beneficiary of ill-gotten wealth
#TheChiefs | Former PCGG Commissioner Atty. Ruben Carranza explains how presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos is leading the effort on how to hide and spend the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos Family.

Marcos was one of the beneficiaries of the Arelma funds which were originally at $2 million at the time the dummy account was opened in New York in 1972. The value increased to roughly about $40 million when the PCGG discovered the dummy account in 1999.
In 2014, the Supreme Court upheld its decision to forfeit the Arelma funds after the Sandiganbayan pointed out that the overall assets and properties of Marcos’ parents were way beyond their salaries as public officials. The family filed appeals to overturn the decision but were rejected.
“Marcos Jr. is a beneficiary of ill-gotten wealth. He has lived on ill-gotten wealth, he has dined on ill-gotten wealth,” said Carranza, who’s now with the International Center for Transitional Justice.
Marcos has refused to recognize the issues about the ill-gotten wealth and the human rights violations under his father’s brutal rule. Despite running on a platform of unity, Marcos has no clear plans on how to engage with the victims of Martial Law as he insisted that he can’t apologize for what his father did.
But Carranza maintained that Marcos couldn’t distance himself from the crimes of his father considering that he’s a co-administrator of the family’s estates.
“He was aware not only of the amount of the assets, not only of the fact that his parents could not have amassed those assets without committing corruption, but he was aware of the efforts—he was leading the efforts to hide them,” added Carranza.
So far, the PCGG has recovered about P175 billion from the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses but P125 billion more remain unreturned. Marcos claimed he would strengthen the PCGG if he gets elected as president, but Carranza believes this statement was rather “hypocritical.”
“The only way to actually strengthen it (PCGG) is for him to come forward and say, ‘Here’s our ill-gotten wealth. We’re returning it and I’m now the president, maybe this is the time for me to do this.’ But I don’t think he will do that,” said Carranza.
