(June 23, 2024) – Sen. Imee Marcos filed a resolution seeking to investigate the recent collision in Ayungin Shoal that injured seven Philippine Navy personnel.
She said Senate Resolution No. 1055 will help the government determine ways to better protect military personnel and citizens during resupply missions.
“This most recent incident marks a serious escalation in the aggressiveness of the People’s Republic of China in intercepting Philippine rotation and resupply missions to Ayungin Shoal,” said Marcos in the proposal.
Last Monday, a Philippine Navy vessel on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre collided with a China Coast Guard ship. One of the injured Filipino soldiers, Jeffrey Facundo, lost his thumb.
“For the first time, Chinese personnel boarded Filipino military boats, took Filipino firearms, and seriously injured a Filipino military personnel,” added Marcos, the sister of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr.
Before the incident, China implemented its new anti-trespassing policy in its claimed territories in the South China Sea, which overlaps with the West Philippine Sea.
The administration said the collision was not an “armed attack” but only a “misunderstanding.”
Marcos furthered that the investigation will also aid the government in asserting the country’s sovereignty in disputed territories.
“The aforementioned escalation took place despite the current strategies being employed by the Philippine authorities including the filing of diplomatic protests, the transparency campaign on rotation and resupply missions, and joint patrols with the United States and other countries,” said the senator.
Her colleague, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero, earlier urged the Department of Foreign Affairs to take a “proactive approach” regarding the West Philippine Sea issue after the latest incident.

Despite the recent collision, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard maintained that they will not be deterred from conducting resupply missions in Ayungin Shoal.
