(June 23, 2024) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Sunday lauded the recent resupply task to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal as “mission accomplished” despite the aggressive actions of China.
Marcos said the Western Command (Wescom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) demonstrated professionalism, courage, and sacrifice to defend the country’s sovereignty without being provoked by the China Coast Guard (CCG).
“Maliwanag na maliwanag kahit gaano kahirap, kahit gaano kabigat ang trabaho na ibinibigay sa inyo ay mission accomplished pa rin kayo every time that you go out,” said Marcos in his visit to Wescom’s headquarters in Palawan.
Last Monday, seven personnel of the Philippine Navy were hurt after their vessel and a CCG ship collided in Ayungin Shoal. One of the soldiers, Jeffrey Facundo, lost his thumb.
Marcos praised the Wescom for maintaining its composure, reiterating his earlier stance that the country’s forces should never be provoked by China’s bullying tactics.
“’Yan ang talagang pinaka-importante dito. Dahil delikado ang sitwasyon at kung isa sa inyo ang nagkamali o nagalit o uminit ang ulo na may ginawa, magkakagulo nang husto,” reminded Marcos, who’s employed a “friend to all” approach in his foreign policy.
Marcos also reiterated that the Philippines has no business “instigating a war.”

The latest incident came after China implemented its new anti-trespassing policy in its claimed territories in the South China Sea, which overlaps with the West Philippine Sea.
The administration said it was not an “armed attack” but a case of “misunderstanding.”

Marcos also awarded medals to 80 Wescom troops who participated in the latest resupply mission.
“It is nothing less than the defense of the sovereignty of the republic, the defense of the territorial integrity of the Republic of the Philippines,” said Marcos. “That is your mission and that is the mission that you have been able to comply with.”
Facundo, a seaman first class underwater operator, received the Order of Lapu-Lapu Rank of Kampilan, while the 79 others were awarded the Order of Lapu-Lapu Rank of Kamagi.
