(August 31, 2024) – The Department of Justice (DOJ) stressed on Saturday that the Philippine government could not dictate the fate of the pastor Apollo Quiboloy regarding his possible extradition to the United States (US).
DOJ Usec. Raul Vasquez explained that no government official would want to violate the law, emphasizing that this is a legal issue that needs to be carefully studied.
“Lahat ng treaties po natin have the force of law once they are signed and concurred in by Senate,” said Vasquez in a media forum. “That is part of our legal obligation. And you can just imagine if we renege on our international obligation in favor of an individual.”
He furthered that the US has yet to request for Quiboloy’s extradition.
“Yung sinasabi niya (Quiboloy) na guarantee, no one in government can give that guarantee,” added Vasquez.
Last Friday, Quiboloy’s camp reiterated his condition to surrender only if Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. issued a written guarantee that he would not be extradited to the US.
The self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God” is among the most wanted criminals in the US Federal Bureau of Investigation due to allegations of unlawful activities, including sex trafficking of children, fraud and coercion, and cash smuggling.
Quiboloy and his cohorts remain at large despite facing arrest warrants for human trafficking and child and sexual abuse.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has raided the Kingdom of Jesus Christ compound to search and arrest the pastor since last week and earlier claimed that he was hiding in an underground facility in his over 30-hectare property.

The DOJ, meanwhile, assured Quiboloy that the government will be fair in handling his case, saying that handling requests for extradition is among its roles.
“I-expect naman nila that things will be acted upon fairly and the courts are, as you know, ang daming ebidensiya niya,” said Vasquez.
“I think that’s part of the process. The wheel of justice is working perfectly fine. It may be grinding slowly but it does work.”
