(June 18, 2021) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has begun an investigation after a 16-year-old boy was killed by police officers in an anti-drug operation in Biñan, Laguna on Wednesday.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) is now looking at reports to find out if there are any discrepancies regarding the death of Johndy Maglinte.
According to PNP Calabarzon, Maglinte and his companion Antonio Dalit were killed after exchanging gunshots with the police officers. Eleazar, however, denied the report that the victims were already handcuffed when they were killed.
“Una, hindi nakaposas (tulad ng) sabi nila,” said Eleazar on Ted Failon and DJ Chacha sa Radyo 5.
Eleazar added Dalit has a previous warrant of arrest, justifying the anti-drug operation of the PNP.
Maglinte has a one-year-old kid and his 17-year-old wife is pregnant with their second child. His family admitted that the victims were involved in drugs but denied that Maglinte would resist arrest, stressing he was shot dead while handcuffed.
Ganun naman ginagawa nila (PNP) nanlaban, sabihin may baril,” said Maglinte’s mother Christiana Maglite in a News 5 interview. “Gawa-gawa na lang nila ‘yan.”
The case comes just a few weeks after a string of killings involving police officers happened in Metro Manila, tarnishing the reputation yet again of the PNP.
Last May 23, four police officers were involved in the shooting of 18-year-old Edwin Arnigo while conducting a cockfight raid in Valenzuela. Eight days later, 52-year-old Lilybeth Valdez was killed in Quezon City after a drunk police officer shot her in close range.
Despite this, President Rodrigo Duterte has continued to defend the PNP, urging them to “shoot to kill” suspects who fight back.
Eleazar assured that if any crimes were committed in the killing of Maglinte and Dalit, the police officers involved will face proper repercussions. He, however, also echoed Duterte’s stance.
