(June 6, 2024) – The country’s workers’ delegation on Wednesday slammed the government for the lack of labor reforms during the annual International Labor Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.
In her speech, delegation head Joanna Bernice Coronation said the government has failed to address the systemic labor rights violations in the Philippines despite the recommendations of the International Labor Organization High Level Tripartite Mission.
“If things are truly improving for workers, why has not a single case out of the 72 trade union killings been resolved? Why do instances of red-tagging and profiling by security forces continue daily?” lamented Coronation, who’s the deputy secretary general of the Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (Sentro).
She said proposals to align national labor laws with international standards have stalled in Congress.
Held yearly by the International Labour Organization, the ILC seeks to establish international labor standards that United Nations members should uphold.
Citing the lack of meaningful reforms and stagnant unionization rates, Sentro also called for the resignation of the Department of Labor and Employment secretary Bienvenido Laguesma.
“The true test of compliance with freedom of association standards is unionization rates, and they remain stagnant,” said Coronation. “This is why wages have stagnated and job quality has not improved.”
In Metro Manila, the daily minimum wage is P610 for non-agriculture workers and P573 for agriculture workers. Labor groups have repeatedly urged Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to order an increase across the nation to adjust to the rising costs.
On Labor Day last month, Marcos vowed to provide opportunities and uplift the living conditions of Filipino workers and their families.
