(October 13, 2024) – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has earned criticisms from netizens after announcing its sanction for NorthPort Batang Pier player John Amores over his involvement in a shooting incident.
Last Friday, PBA’s legal counsel, Atty. Ogie Narvasa, said the league suspended Amores without pay for the entire PBA Commissioner’s Cup for violating the Uniform Players Contract.
“Quarreling with other players in a pickup game, engaging in a challenge to a fight, chasing after his protagonist with a handgun, and then shooting his gun are not consistent with the standard behavior and image that the PBA wishes to project to its fans,” said Narvasa.
He furthered that Amores, who is facing an attempted homicide charge, must also undergo a counseling program before getting reinstated. The controversial forward was allowed to continue practicing with the Batang Pier.
“Isolating him from his normal environment will not be helpful and healthy for his rehabilitation,” added Narvasa. “He must learn to deal with his issues under as normal circumstances as possible.”
Last month, Amores shot Lee Cacalda while riding a motorcycle driven by his brother in Lumban, Laguna after a heated argument during a pickup game. Cacalda survived the attack.

The PBA’s decision did not sit well with netizens, who deemed it permissive.
Some even cited the cases of Magnolia Hotshots forward Calvin Abueva and former import Renaldo Balkman.
In 2019, Abueva was suspended by the PBA for 16 months for his aggressive conduct. Balkman, meanwhile, was meted out a lifetime ban in 2013 for choking his teammate. It was lifted in 2018.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said they consulted NorthPort before deciding on Amores’ sanction.
“Parang anak natin itong players. ‘Pag may anak tayo, pinaparusahan natin pero hindi natin pinapabayaan. ‘Yan ‘yung (gustong) mangyari ng PBA,” said Marcial.
Amores was previously involved in punching incidents during his college stint with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
