(March 24, 2021) – Five men, who were accused indirectly for the death of a Philippine Airlines cabin crew on New Year’s Day, filed charges against people for maligning and harassing them, their lawyer said on Wednesday.
Mike Santiago said five of Christine Dacera’s friends wanted the mother of the flight attendant, her lawyer, and other people to stop maligning them because they have no proof they were behind her death.
“This should serve as a warning against any and all individuals or entities who are out to malign or continuously harass our clients,” Santiago said in an interview with reporters outside the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office.
“We have been withholding the filing of these cases because of the danger to the security of our clients as well as their health concerns. Some of them have already become very sickly nowadays because of the stress that they have been enduring all this time.”
Santiago represented Rommel Galido, John Paul Dela Serna, Gregorio De Guzman, Clark Rapinan, and Valentine Rosales, who were also facing criminal charges filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for the indirect death of Dacera.
The NBI had filed complaints against 11 men for obstruction of justice, perjury, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, and delivery of illegal drugs. The police had earlier filed rape with homicide charges.
Santiago said complaints were filed against Sharon Dacera, mother of the Philippine Airlines cabin crew, for perjury, libel, and malicious prosecution, among other charges.
Dacera’s lawyer, Brick Reyes, was charged with slander and incriminating innocent persons, he added.
Four Makati City police officers—Corporal Louie Lopez, Sergeant Jun Alimurong, Captain Danilo Oamil, and Colonel Harold Depositar—were also sued for unlawful arrests and illegal detention of Galido and Dela Serna.
Two more people—Marichi Ramos Fong and Katherine Anne Dacera-Facelo —were also charged.
In a text message, Dacera’s mother reacted angrily after the complaints were filed, vowing to “fight for the truth” and seek justice for her daughter.
“Harapin nila ang kasong sinampa ng PNP at NBI,” Dacera said. “Haharapin ko rin sila para mabigyan ng totoo at tamang hustisya ang pagkamatay ng anak ko. Kahit ang mamamayang Pilipino buong mundo [ay] nag-aantay sa tama at totoong hustisya na maibigay para kay Christine.”
The Makati City prosecutor has not decided to indict the 11 friends of Dacera.
