(May 14, 2024) – The Department of Education (DepEd) has decided to revert to the traditional school calendar for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, with classes beginning on July 29. This adjustment plans to include Saturday as makeup classes to compensate for the reduction in school days.
The decision comes after disruptions in the usual school schedule, including suspensions of face-to-face classes due to extreme heat conditions. Saturday classes are intended to ensure that students do not fall behind in their lessons despite these reductions in regular school days.
The move has sparked mixed reactions among parents and students.
“Masyado na pong mahaba. Kaunti na lang pahinga ng mga bata. Kaunti na lang ‘yung laro niya,” Joan Tugay, a parent, expressed her worries about the extended school hours.
Some parents support the decision, highlighting the necessity of the adjustment to a June school opening and coping with the suspension of face-to-face classes due to severe heat.
Students have also shared their sentiments regarding this move.
Jaijai Tugay, a Grade 2 student, stated his preference for having no classes on weekends, emphasizing his activities every Saturday and Sunday like doing assignments.
Teachers, like Angelica Manalata, are prepared to take on the extra day of classes if it benefits the students and educators, alike.
“Kasi with the previous two years po na pumapasok ‘yung mga bata ng summer marami pong apektado very hazardous sa teachers and students to the point na maraming nagkakasakit,” Manalata said.
She hopes for additional compensation for teachers due to the increased workload and reduced rest days.
“Hihilingin na lang namin na sana ma-compensate sa gagawin naming sacrifice… Isang araw na lang magiging pahinga namin, magiging mahirap po,” Manalata added.
