Marcos warns fake news threatens PH freedom

(June 12, 2025) – President Bongbong Marcos on Thursday cautioned Filipinos about how false information can erode the foundations of the hard-won freedom and independence of the Philippines.

In the commemoration of the country’s 127th Independence Day in Manila, the president stressed that fake news is a threat to liberty that continues to prevail in new forms even in contemporary times.

“If we will look at what is happening around the world today, freedom is fleeting,” said Marcos. “Fake news, misinformation, herd mentality can erase our way of life, our culture, our value system that we hold so dear.”

The chief executive also urged the public to stay vigilant against the spread of lies and fabrications of information deeming it a modern-day societal plague.

“Ang mga kasinungalingang walang hangganan—mga balitang walang katotohanan at maling impormasyon—ito ang mga salot sa ating kalayaan,” added Marcos.

A survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) released in March revealed that 59% of Filipinos see fake news on the internet and social media as a “serious” problem.

It, however, found that 65% of respondents had difficulty distinguishing true from false information.

“Nakakalungkot din na may ilan din sa ating mga kababayan ay pinipilit ang maling paniniwala para sa interes ng iba at hindi para sa kapakanan ng ating mga kababayang Pilipino,” said Marcos.

Last February, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) undersecretary Claire Castro said Malacañang would support a measure defining and banning fake news.

In the same month, the tri-committee – composed of committees in public order and safety, public information, and information and communications technology – of the House of Representatives began investigating the rampant fake news and disinformation online.
