(October 21, 2024) – A progressive group on Monday urged Sen. Bato Dela Rosa and Sen. Bong Go to file an indefinite leave of absence ahead of the probe of the Senate regarding the brutal war on drugs of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Akbayan Party-list stressed that the alleged involvements of Dela Rosa and Go, both loyal allies of Duterte, in the cruel campaign pose a conflict of interest in the impending investigation, which would undermine its credibility.
“Para namang pinagbabantay mo ang asong gubat sa mga tupa o pinagbabantay mo ang mga bayawak sa mga manok—gusto nilang (Dela Rosa and Go) maging imbestigador pero sila mismo ang dapat iniimbestigahan,” said Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña in a media release.
He explained that the Senate can only ensure the fairness of the inquiry by allowing Dela Rosa and Go to participate as resource speakers instead of “impartial legislators.”
“Senators Go and Dela Rosa are not mere bystanders in this deadly chapter of our history—they are central figures,” added Cendaña. “Their close association with Duterte and alleged active roles in perpetuating the killings mean that they cannot, in good conscience, participate in this probe as if they were mere observers.”

Dela Rosa was tagged as the main architect of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs when he was the chief of the Philippine National Police. He repeatedly touted “Oplan Tokhang.”
Go, who previously served as Duterte’s special aide, was accused of having a part in giving cash rewards to police officers for killing drug suspects.
The reward system was revealed by former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office general manager Royina Garma in a hearing of the quad committee of the House of Representatives.
Duterte, Dela Rosa, and Go all denied the existence of a reward system.

Human rights groups estimated that around 30,000 individuals were killed during Duterte’s heavy-handed policy.
“The Senate owes it to the Filipino people, especially the families of those who were unjustly killed, to conduct a credible investigation without any semblance of whitewashing or cover-up,” said Cendaña.
