(June 18, 2025) — The Department of Education will prioritize underserved areas in its efforts to address the lack of classrooms in the country.
According to DepEd Assistant Secretary for Operations Jocelyn Andaya, there is still a need for 165,000 classrooms in the country as of late 2024.
Andaya said there is an ongoing Public-Private Partnership effort to build 105,000 new classrooms to address this backlog.
“Itong mga classrooms ay naka-focus lang sa areas na long been underserved. Let’s say ‘yung mga last-mile schools na ‘di pa natin nabibigyan ng silid-aralan,” said Andaya in an interview with Ted Failon & DJ Chacha on Wednesday.
The Education department assured that government has taken into account the country’s vulnerability to calamities in designing and building classrooms.
“We are working with DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) para makabuo ng climate-resilient schools na kayang tumagal sa typhoons, floods, at earthquakes,” Andaya added.
SUBMERGED IN FLOODS
The agency also said new classrooms will help address severe flooding in schools.
It can be recalled that classrooms in Bulacan and Pangasinan were submerged in flood waters due to heavy rains and high tide ahead of the beginning of the school year.
“‘Yung mga nandoon sa ganoong eskwelahan ay pinapalipat natin sa mga karatig-eskwelahan na hindi ganoon ang problema. Kung wala naman, ang ginagawa natin ay nagkakaroon tayo ng blended learning,” explained Andaya.
“Ginagawan naman po ng paraan ng DepEd na humanap ng lugar sa tulong ng LGU para ma-relocate ang ating paaralan sa area na hindi bahain at maaabot ng mga bata araw-araw,” she added.
