PBBM on improving education: ‘Support the teachers’

(June 18, 2025) — President Bongbong Marcos stressed on Wednesday that providing teachers with proper support is the first step to improving the country’s education system.

In his exclusive interview with News5 and OnePH anchor Cheryl Cosim for the BBM Podcast Episode 2, Marcos lauded teachers as the hardest working public servants in the entire government.

“They really are the most busy, ang daming ginagawa, kahit wala na sa job description, kung anu-ano ang ginagawa. They’re leaders of their communities, they take care of our children,” said Marcos.

However, Marcos believes that teachers should be relieved of certain tasks in order to focus on instruction.

“Support the teachers. One of the things that we did, binawasan natin ang kanilang administrative duties. Then we hired many more teachers,” said Marcos.

Marcos said that while public school teachers are public servants, they must also make a living.

The 19th Congress recently passed a bill which would overhaul the promotion system in public schools.

The bill establishes two distinct career pathways for educators: one to focus on classroom instruction and another for school administration.

Should the President sign the bill into law, teachers would no longer be burdened by administrative tasks and delivering lessons at the same time.

Aside from easing teachers’ workload, Marcos also said the government is conducting programs to ensure the teachers keep up with developments in education.

“We have put in place a program for the retraining, re-education of our teachers. Marami nang bagong teknolohiya that they have to learn about,” Marcos said.

The President also recognized the need to tweak the performance audit for teachers.

Marcos said these assessments pressure teachers into passing even students who do not meet the standard for advancement.

“We will remedy that. That performance review is not going to be based on that. It’s going to be based on the students’ actual performance in tests,” explained the president.
