Shimenet! It’s that time of the year na pala when we recall some of the words that became part of the general lexicon of Filipinos in 2024. Aw shucks, we almost forgot. Not very demure, not very mindful as independent contractors.
While some were too busy melting down and making death threats or being clueless about flood control projects or having a hard time choosing between kadiliman and kasamaan, we had to continue putting in the work to make our readers—all 17 of them—and Mary Grace Piattos exclaim: “Eyyy!”
You may try to destroy us. You can skin us alive, burn us, and throw our ashes to the wind. But let it be known: You will find us unbowed with this list of five popular words in the Philippines in 2024.
5. Bossing!
The word has been part of the local slang for decades now. In pop culture, it’s largely associated with Vic Sotto. But this year, an erstwhile unknown content creator owned it.
His zany skits as a scam artist looking for a quick payday made Malupiton an online sensation in 2024. He always ends up getting caught and screaming “Bossing!” in a sarcastically patronizing way. It became a popular and relatable quip among Filipinos. You could hear it being casually thrown around almost everywhere, proving Malupiton’s kakup**an is for everyone.
4. Pares
For some inexplicable reason, pares blew up this year. For a long stretch in the first half of 2024, almost every single person in the Philippines craved the braised beef stew paired with rice that’s still not P20 per kilo. It was on everyone’s lips—literally and figuratively. Pares Olympics > Paris Olympics.
Surprisingly enough, not everyone has tried pares before even though it has been around since 1970 B.D. or Before Diwata. It’s a comforting dish that has long satisfied the hunger of many Filipinos. Lalo na ‘yung mga lasing.
3. Nonchalant
“Nonchalant” becoming a buzzword among Filipinos in 2024 was a huge irony. Because Filipinos are anything but. We’re Filipinos, of course we’re OA.
But yeah, non-nonchalantly, “nonchalant” was a hit slang this year, especially on social media. Suddenly, being keber (the 2010s version of “nonchalant”) about things became cool. It led to memes, TikTok videos, and cringey captions. It became so popular, Merriam-Webster had to clarify that there’s no such word as “chalant.” For what it’s worth, at least Filipinos discovered something new aside from that resort in Chocolate Hills.
2. BINI
The number of Filipinos who became fans of BINI this year was the opposite of PhilHealth’s subsidy: Not zero. The P-pop group sensation’s ascent as the Philippines’ top musical act is one of the biggest stories of 2024. BINI got so big, even their choice to wear face masks ridiculously became an issue.
BINI was everywhere, and BLOOMS couldn’t stop talking about them. Aiah, Maloi, Colet, Sheena, Mikha, Stacey, Jhoanna, and Gwen became household names. Simply put, 2024 was the Year of BINI. Sayang, medyo na-late ka lang, Denise Julia.
