(September 28, 2024) – An environmental group on Saturday echoed the calls for the impeachment of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio due to her alleged misuse of confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (PNE) stressed that allegations of corruption, betrayal of public trust, and abuse of power by Duterte-Carpio must not be overlooked.
“Nakikiisa kami sa panawagan ng malawak na mamamayan para sa impeachment ni Sara Duterte upang siya’y managot hindi lamang sa kanyang paglustay at pagbulsa sa kayamanan ng bayan,” said Kalikasan PNE in a statement.
Duterte-Caprio served as DepEd secretary from 2022 until last June, when she resigned from the post.
Last Monday, progressive groups amplified the calls to remove Duterte-Carpio during a protest at the House of Representatives. On the same day, Duterte-Carpio skipped the plenary debates for the OVP’s proposed budget worth over P700 million next year.
“Si Sara ay kinatawan din ng pamilyang Duterte na dapat managot sa malawakang paglabag sa karapatang pantao at pasistang terorismo, pati na rin iba pang krimen laban sa mamamayan,” added Kalikasan PNE.
Last Thursday, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said it was drafting an impeachment complaint against Duterte-Carpio, adding that it will be ready by November when the lower chamber’s sessions resume.
In a media briefing last Wednesday, Duterte-Carpio remained unfazed, saying she will not vacate her position.
Until now, she has yet to explain the OVP’s spending of P125 million worth of confidential funds in just 11 days in December 2022. During a budget hearing last August 27, she quarreled with lawmakers when asked about it.

Under her leadership, the DepEd was flagged by the Commission on Audit for more than P12 billion worth of unsettled disallowances, suspensions, and charges in 2023.
She also left over 1.5 million educational items, including laptops, books, and classroom furniture undelivered in warehouses, according to current DepEd chief Sonny Angara.
