(March 14, 2025) – The Malacañang on Friday claimed that the political feud between Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. and former president Rodrigo Duterte had nothing to do with the government’s decision to assist the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in the latter’s arrest.
Presidential Communications Office undersecretary Claire Castro maintained that the Philippines only fulfilled its obligations with Interpol.
“Meron pang UniTeam, walang UniTeam, it will be the same. Hindi tayo puwede magkaroon ng special treatment dahil lang may friendship,” said Castro in a media briefing, as quoted by the Philippine News Agency. “We will just abide by the law.”
Interpol carried out the arrest warrant on behalf of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is investigating Duterte for possible crimes against humanity in his brutal war on drugs.
“Kung mangyayari ito sa iba pang mga suspect na may warrant of arrest, basta valid ‘yung warrant of arrest at ito ay na-course through the Interpol, gagawin pa rin natin kung ano ang dapat gawin ng gobyerno,” added Castro.

Marcos and Duterte have exchanged insults over the past few months, stemming from the abolition of the UniTeam due to political differences. Marcos and Duterte’s daughter, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio ran under the said alliance in the 2022 elections.
In 1952, the Philippines became a member of Interpol, the world’s largest police organization. It facilitates the collaboration among police forces worldwide to combat transnational crime.
On Wednesday, Marcos maintained that he only abided by Interpol and not the ICC regarding Duterte’s arrest.
On Tuesday, Duterte was flown to the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands. He will appear before the pre-trial chamber today.
The ICC could issue more arrest warrants in the coming days for Sen. Bato Dela Rosa and several former officials of the Philippine National Police.
