(April 25, 2025) – A lawmaker on Friday urged the government to file a case against a marketing company in Makati allegedly contracted by China to promote its narratives amid the tension in the West Philippine Sea.
Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation must charge Infinitus Marketing Solutions, Inc. with treason, among other violations of the Revised Penal Code.
“These laws punish any Filipino who betrays or is disloyal to his country and who works against its national interest, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” said Rodriguez in a statement.
During a hearing in the Senate on Thursday, Sen. Francis Tolentino revealed that the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines paid the marketing firm P930,000 for troll farms to spread fake news and disinformation in favor of China.
Rodriguez added that embassy officers who contracted Infinitus Marketing Solutions, Inc. must be sanctioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs for being “principals by direct participation.”
“I am interested in knowing the social media personalities they (Chinese Embassy in the Philippines) have engaged and paid to work against our national interest and promote China’s false narratives on the West Philippine Sea,” said Rodriguez, the former dean of the College of Law at San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
Tingog Rep. Jude Acidre, meanwhile, suggested seeking help from the diplomatic corps to stop the alleged interference of China in the upcoming elections.
It came after the National Security Council told in the same hearing that there have been “indications” of China doing “information operations” to meddle with the polls in May. The China Foreign Ministry already denied the allegations.
“I don’t think we can ever countenance such a practice of hiring our own local companies and our own people to do damage against our very own interests,” said Acidre, a deputy majority leader, in a media release.
