(May 28, 2025) — The Liberal Party (LP) has not yet made a decision on whether it will join the emerging supermajority coalition in the House of Representatives, party stalwart Erin Tañada said.
“We were surprised by the statement of Deputy Speaker JJ Suarez,” Tañada said in an interview over One News’ Morning Matters, disputing claims by House Deputy Speaker JJ Suarez that most LP members have already aligned with the bloc.
“In our last meeting, it was agreed by the incoming members of the 20th Congress to table the matter for further discussions,” he said.
Tañada clarified that the party is awaiting the return of LP chairman senator-elect Kiko Pangilinan from the United States, where he attended his daughter’s graduation. Pangilinan’s input will be key in determining the party’s position both in the House and the Senate.
“Since we’re talking about the 20th Congress and the incoming members in both chambers, they decided to wait for Senator Kiko to return to the Philippines to further discuss how the members of the House will position themselves vis-à-vis Kiko’s position in the Senate,” he said.
Tañada emphasized that the LP’s internal discussions had not reached a point of committing to any bloc.
“It was very clear in our discussion last week that we would table the matter,” he said, adding that it would have been helpful if Suarez had named the supposed LP members who joined the supermajority.
He acknowledged that political alignments are being shaped by simultaneous races for House Speaker and Senate President, both of which the LP is carefully considering.
On the possibility of aligning with the administration coalition, Tañada said the option remains on the table but underscored that party principles and constituency needs must guide the decision.
“These are serious questions that are being discussed,” he said. “We have to realize that certain principles of our members have to be taken into consideration. The next question, of course, is whether we will be voting as a bloc or allow members to decide based on their conscience.”
