Makati ‘drainage motel’ sealed off amid drug den allegations

(May 28, 2025) — Makati City authorities have sealed off a drainage system infamously dubbed as a “drainage motel” after it went viral on social media for allegedly serving as a hideout for drug users and street dwellers.

A video clip showing a long-haired man emerging from a manhole at the corner of VA Rufino and Adelantado streets stunned motorists and pedestrians earlier this week. The footage, which quickly spread online, showed the man sprinting away after climbing out of the drainage.

Following the viral incident, News5 visited the site and found that the manhole has since been cemented over, preventing further access. A local security officer revealed that the drainage has long been used as a makeshift shelter, attracting not just homeless individuals but also those allegedly involved in illegal drug use.

“Binansagan na ‘yan ng ilan bilang drainage motel. Hindi lang isang beses. Marami na ang pumupunta diyan,” the source said, noting that individuals often emerge weak and emaciated after staying inside for hours. According to the source, both men and women — some suspected to be involved in the informal scrap trade — have frequented the tunnel.

The Makati City Police confirmed they are investigating the site as a potential drug den. Their inspection of the drainage revealed makeshift bedding, tattered bags, and traces of burnt wires—indicators often linked to solvent abuse.

“We saw filthy clothes and bags, wires that had been cut up—this place had clearly been used as a living space for a long time,” Makati Police Chief Col. Jean dela Torre said.

City authorities tried to locate the man seen in the viral footage but were unsuccessful. Police have since stepped up patrols in the area to ensure no one can re-enter what has come to be known as the “drainage motel.”

The city government has not yet issued a formal statement but is expected to coordinate further with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents.
