(April 30, 2025) – Journalists’ groups and advocates on Wednesday condemned the fatal shooting of veteran journalist and former mayor Juan “Johnny” Dayang in his residence, as they pressed authorities to ensure that the case is brought to justice.
According to the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS), Dayang, 89, was shot dead by an unidentified assailant inside his home in Aklan at night on April 29.
The Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI), where the late journalist served as its chairperson emeritus, described his death as a “significant loss to the Philippine media and political landscape.”
The association highlighted Dayang’s contributions to the country’s publishing industry. Dayang held positions in several organizations including the Manila Overseas Press Club, National Press Club, Federation of Provincial Press Clubs of the Philippines, and Catholic Mass Media Awards.
“We strongly condemn this killing, and we are calling for justice,” PAPI president Nelson Santos said in a statement. “Hindi niya deserved ang cruel and senseless end.”
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) also condemned the killing, calling the attack against Dayang “contemptible.”
“We appreciate the swift action of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security on this matter and join the community on calling for a thorough investigation and resolution of this killing, which happened as we are about to mark World Press Freedom Day,” the NUJP said.
The German embassy in the Philippines also joined press groups in calling for justice.
Germany, along with Estonia are the co-chairs of Media Freedom Coalition, a network of countries advocating for the right to press freedom.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an investigation to find the perpetrator behind the killing, PTFoMS said. Earlier, law enforcers visited Dayang’s residence where the crime took place.
“We assure the public that the DOJ (Department of Justice), the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation), and the PNP are one with the PTFOMS in working for the immediate resolution of the case,” the task force said in a social media post.
