(April 28, 2025) – Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero has expressed his deepest sympathies to the victims and their families following the tragic incident at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, Canada.
On Saturday night, a vehicle plowed into a crowd, killing 11 people and injuring 12 others.
Escudero condemned the violence and emphasized that such acts have no place in the world.
He also called on Canadian authorities to fully investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
“I trust that the Canadian law enforcement agencies will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served.”
Escudero further urged Philippine Consulate and other Embassy official in Vancouver to provide comprehensive support to the affected Filipinos and assist in any way possible during this difficult time.
Moreover, several Philippine senators have vowed to seek justice for the victims.
Sen. Win Gatchalian expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heartbreaking tragedy that marred a celebration meant to honor Filipino culture and unity.
“Buong suporta nating hinihiling ang mabilis at masusing imbestigasyon upang mapanagot ang may sala,” he said, calling for a swift and thorough investigation to hold the perpetrator accountable.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros also condemned the attack, labeling it a “senseless and cruel” act of violence.
She urged Philippine officials in Canada to ensure that the victims’ families receive all necessary assistance and that justice is pursued.
“Hindi kayo nag-iisa, nandito kami para sa inyo. Kasama niyo kami sa pagdadalamhati, sa paghahanap ng hustisya, at sa pagbangon,” Hontiveros assured the Filipino community in Canada.
The senators’ statements came after Malacañang called on the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver to assist the victims’ families and coordinate with Canadian authorities.
The incident, which has shaken the Filipino Canadian community, has led to calls for greater protection of migrant communities during public events abroad.
Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing. Authorities in Canada have assured the public that all efforts are being made to ensure accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
