Bulusan Volcano placed under Alert Level 1 following phreatic eruption

(April 28, 2025) – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert status of Bulusan Volcano from Alert Level 0 (normal) to Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) following a phreatic eruption that occurred on Monday morning, April 28.

The eruption took place around 4:36 a.m. and lasted for 24 minutes. It produced a bent plume that rose 4,500 meters above the crater before drifting toward the west to southwest.

According to PHIVOLCS, ashfall was reported in Barangays Cogon and Bolos in Irosin, Barangays Puting Sapa, Guruyan, and Buraburan in Juban, and Barangay Tulatula Sur in Magallanes, in Sorsogon Province.

Following this, residents were advised to wear protective masks or use wet cloth to avoid inhaling ash.

“Communities that experience ashfall must take all necessary precautions and use protective masks or wet cloth to prevent ash inhalation,” said PHIVOLCS.

People living in valleys and along river and stream channels were also advised to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and possible lahars, especially in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should phreatic eruption occur.

Meanwhile, local government units and the public were reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.

Caution is also advised within the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast sector due to the potential impacts of volcanic hazards, such as pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), ballistic projectiles, rockfalls, landslides, and ashfall.

Civil aviation authorities were likewise advised to inform pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit, as ash from a sudden phreatic eruption could pose serious hazards to aircraft.
