(July 8, 2024) – In another leadership shakeup, 19 station commanders of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) on Monday were relieved, just weeks after Brigadier Gen. Nicolas Torre took over as the director of the Police Regional Office-Davao (PRO-11).
PRO-11 spokesperson Maj. Catherine Dela Rey said the reshuffle was part of Torre’s prerogative to reposition the police officers under his command.
“Sila po ang nagde-decide kung sa tingin nila kung ano ‘yung mas nakakabuti sa isang lugar o sa isang assignment,” said Dela Rey.
Col. Lito Patay was promoted as the new officer-in-charge of DCPO. His relieved colleagues, meanwhile, were reassigned to various headquarters in the region.
Last May, 40 police officers, including seven station commanders, were relieved and reassigned in connection with the death of seven drug suspects in Davao City last March.
The seven drug suspects were killed in less than a week following the declaration of Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte of an all-out war on drugs.
It remains unclear if Duterte was informed about the leadership changes in DCPO.
The leadership shakeup came amid the continued evasion of fugitive Apollo Quibiloy. The PNP has been called out by lawmakers for their failure to locate the self-styled pastor, who’s facing charges of human trafficking and child abuse.
Last June 10, police officers tried to enter the compound of Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) in Davao City to arrest him and his five cohorts. Supporters of the self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God,” however, formed a human barricade and blocked the police officers.
The Dutertes, a close ally of Quibiloy, blasted the operation, claiming that it was overkill and unlawful. The elder Duterte is the property administrator of KOJC.
Dela Rey, however, denied that the leadership shuffle isn’t connected to the case of Quiboloy.
“There’s no relation to the Quiboloy case. No relation to politics. No relation to any personal reasons. Trabaho lang talaga,” said Dela Rey.
After his appointment last month, Torre said arresting Quiboloy is not his main priority, citing the need to focus more on maintaining peace and order in the Davao Region instead.
