Duterte offered sympathies to the former leader’s family as he took a moment of silence in his speech at the Malacañang Palace after the signing of newly approved legislation.
“We thank the former president for his service to our country,” Duterte said.
“I hope that my fellow Filipinos will be inspired by his legacy. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Aquino family. Be assured of the government’s assistance in this period of mourning and, above all, please accept the love and the prayers of a grateful nation.”

Duterte, who succeeded Aquino in 2016, described the ex-leader as someone who did his best over the course of his presidency. He also encouraged the public to “set aside differences” in this time of mourning.
Aquino probably died in his sleep on Thursday morning but was rushed to the Capitol Medical Center where he was declared dead on arrival. Doctors said the cause of death was renal failure brought about by his diabetes. He had been under dialysis since 2019 for his kidney illness and had heart surgery two years ago.

Duterte’s relationship with his predecessor had been marred with conflicts especially when Aquino voiced out his criticisms against the brutal war against drugs.
Supporters of both leaders had engaged in a series of bickering online due to political differences.
Despite the political divide, both Aquino’s allies and rivals also extended their sympathies to the bereaved family.
“His memory and his family’s legacy of offering their lives for the cause of democracy will forever remain etched in our hearts,” Duterte said.
