(June 24, 2021) – Former president Benigno Aquino III died in a hospital from kidney disease, his sister said on Thursday as the country mourns the loss of a leader who was instrumental in building a strong economy.
Pinky Aquino-Abellada, the former president’s second-eldest sister, told journalists her brother “died peacefully in his sleep” due to renal disease secondary to diabetes at around 6:30 a.m. He was rushed to Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City where he was proclaimed dead.
“No words can express how broken our hearts are and how long it will take for us to accept the reality that he is gone,” Aquino-Abellada told the media.
“Mission accomplished, Noy. Be happy now with Dad and Mom. We love you and we are so blessed to have had the privilege to have had you as our brother. We’ll miss you forever, 3.”
Aquino, the only son of the country’s democracy icons, served as the country’s 15th chief executive from 2010 to 2016. He was elected to power with a promise to restore public trust in governance through his “Daang Matuwid” mantra.
In her speech, Aquino-Abellada briefly recalled her brother’s promises as a public servant as well as the difficulties he went through because of various political controversies.

“Masakit para sa’min na tahimik n’yang tinanggap ang mga batikos. Natatak sa aming mga magkakapatid na noong sinabihan namin s’yang magsalita at labanan ang mga maling haka-haka, simple ang sinagot n’ya—kaya pa n’yang matulog sa gabi,” she said.
Aquino’s term was battered by a series of controversies, including the administration’s sloppy disaster response at the height of the deadly Typhoon Yolanda, internationally known as Haiyan, in 2013. It killed more than 7,000 in Eastern Visayas.
In 2015, some 44 soldiers belonging to the Special Action Force died in the Mamasapano clash due to botched operations against Islamist militants in the province of Maguindanao.
Sandiganbayan, in 2017, found probable cause to put the former leader on trial over graft and usurpation charges in relation to the deadly Mamasapano operations.
But the anti-corruption court eventually dropped the case in 2019 at the request of Ombudsman Samuel Martires, who argued no president can be charged with usurpation, to begin with, because he was the highest public officer of the land.
He had a separate homicide complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman, along with his former police chief Alan Purisima and former SAF chief Getulio Napeñas Jr. All of them were acquitted later on. The Supreme Court also upheld the decision.
“Hinarap n’ya ang lahat ng imbestigasyon at akusasyon … Because when you enter public service, when you serve with honesty and dignity, and you know you have committed no crimes against the people, hindi ka matatakot na magsabi ng totoo,” Aquino-Abellada continued.
Prior to his death, Aquino also underwent heart surgery and was on dialysis in 2019.
His remains were brought to the Heritage Park.
Malacañang said the former president can be laid to rest at the Heroes’ Cemetery in Taguig depending on his family’s decision.
Politicians, government officials, and organizations have offered their condolences to the Aquino family as they honored the former leader’s legacy.
