(June 24, 2021) – The Malacañang has expressed gratitude to former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for his contributions to the country, joining the people in mourning.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque opened his regular public address with a moment of silence to honor Aquino, who died on Thursday morning because of renal disease second to diabetes.
“We commiserate and condole with the family and loved ones of former president Benigno Simeon Aquino III as we extend our condolences on his untimely demise,” said Roque. “We ask our people to offer a prayer for the eternal repose of our former chief executive. Rest in peace.”
Aquino, the country’s 15th chief executive and predecessor of President Rodrigo Duterte, was rushed to the Capitol Medical Center before he was proclaimed dead.

Politicians from various parties have offered their condolences to the bereaved family, remembering Aquino as a leader who helped spur the country’s economy during his administration.
Roque also remembered the only son of the country’s democracy icons for his “walang wangwang” order, regulating the use of sirens and blaring horns for government officials along highways.
“Nanungkulan siya sa isang demokrasya at siyempre maaalala rin natin ‘yung kanyang order na walang wangwang, at maaalala natin siya bilang isang simpleng public servant na hinalal ng taumbayan,” said Roque.
Other administration officials also remembered Aquino as someone kind and professional in discharging his duties.
Department of Health secretary Francisco Duque III, who served as head of the Civil Service Commission during Aquino’s term, said he was “saddened” upon hearing Aquino’s passing.
“I’m sure that the lives of the people whom he touched will be really saddened by this very shocking news,” said Duque. “The value of professionalism is what he holds dear to his heart because he’s a public servant and he has always been a professional politician, but I think the service he has rendered to the Filipino nation springs from his desire to serve.”
Department of National Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana paid tribute to Aquino who he recognized for “equipping our military to better respond to the evolving domestic and regional security challenges.”
As of posting, Duterte has yet to issue a statement on Aquino’s death.
Aquino lived a quiet life after his term ended in 2016. He had been suffering from various illnesses since 2019 when he reportedly went through heart surgery. Aquino also had dialysis for at least five months.
