(June 24, 2021) – Members of the Liberal Party (LP) on Thursday expressed their grief over the death of their chairman emeritus, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Vice President Leni Robredo, LP chairman, honored Aquino for his honesty and service to the country.
“Patas ang tingin ni P-Noy sa lahat sa ilalim ng batas. Tapat at may paninindigan siya sa tama at makatarungan. He was courageous in facing down the systemic ills of society, in dismantling long-entrenched systems of corruption, in standing up for the country in the international stage,” said Robredo.
Robredo also remembered Aquino’s nuances, which she said reflected the spirit of his servitude.
“How he always carried a copy of the Constitution in his pocket. How, in one of his State of the Nation Addresses, he stated: ‘Hangga’t nagsisilbi tayong lakas ng isa’t isa, patuloy nating mapapatunayan na the Filipino is worth dying for, the Filipino is worth living for,’” said Robredo.
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, LP vice chairman, also mourned the passing of his “long-time friend.”
“I am thankful for the opportunity of having worked with P-Noy during his presidency. He meant well and wanted the best for the country and for all of us,” said Drilon.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros added Aquino’s service will forever be remembered, saying that he made his six years of presidency count.
“His remarkable focus on the hallmarks of democracy and public service are solid foundations that our leaders can build upon. To honor his legacy is to continue the fight against corruption and reaffirm our fundamental freedoms and human rights,” said Hontiveros in a statement. “I am very proud to call him my president.”
Former senator Bam Aquino shared his heart is broken over his cousin’s passing.
“Sa mga susunod na oras, maraming sasabihin tungkol sa kanya, iba totoo, iba hindi. Pero ito ang masasabi ko, lahat ibinigay niya para sa Pilipino. Wala siyang itinira,” said the enterpreneurship advocate.
Before his presidency, Aquino was already part of LP during his stints as Tarlac representative and senator.
Aquino helped LP regain its popularity in 2010 when he was nominated as the party’s standard-bearer for the elections, riding the wave of public clamor following the death of his mother, former President Cory Aquino. The party’s initial top candidate, then-senator Mar Roxas, gave way to Aquino.
Roxas has also expressed his condolences for Aquino and his family, calling for prayers.
Following the end of Aquino’s term in 2016, LP has been largely squashed by the populist rule of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has repeatedly blamed Aquino for many of the country’s issues.
Robredo pointed out that Aquinio’s admirable qualities are his best legacy.
“He was a man of both kindness and toughness. And P-Noy was, first and foremost, a man of integrity and honor, a man who always put the welfare of the people front and center. No amount of historical distortion can change the truth: That every decision he made was oriented towards the betterment of the Filipino people,” said Robredo.
