(AUGUST 22, 2019) – Convicted murderer and rapist Antonio Sanchez may not be eligible for release under the new good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law, according to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Thursday.
BuCor director Nicanor Faeldon said the former Calauan mayor may be disqualified because of reports of P1.5-million worth of illegal drugs found inside his cell nine years ago, as well as the flat-screen television and airconditioning unit seized.
These are clear violations of prison rules.
“I am assuring you, at the first glance of his records here, he may not qualify for GCTA,” Faeldon said.
“Nagtayo ka ng luxurious na kubol mo riyan, good behavior ba ‘yun? Samantalang ‘yung mga kasamahan mo, natutulog sa butas-butas,” he added.
The Corrections chief also assured there will be no favoritism in the assessment of the prisoners’ papers, which will be reviewed thoroughly by legal experts.
Sanchez was seen at the New Bilibid Prison, dismissing speculations that he had been released even before the decision on the new good conduct time allowance or GCTA law was passed.
Meanwhile, Senator Roland dela Rosa, at the sidelines of the Senate hearing on the mandatory ROTC, said he had received reports that Sanchez is now a “changed man.”
Dela Rosa, who also served as BuCor chief, stressed that Sanchez’s possible release should not have been an issue had he been sentenced with capital punishment.
BuCor confirmed this week that the ex-mayor will be among some 11,000 inmates to be released in the next few months after the Supreme Court’s decision to retroactively apply a new law that will increase an inmate’s GCTA.
Sanchez was sentenced with seven terms of reclusion perpetua in 1995 over the rape and murder of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta, as well as the killing of her companion, Allan Gomez. (Randell Ritumalta/JMF)
