(November 18, 2024) – Aurora will experience a prolonged loss of electricity after the devastation of Typhoon Pepito, an official of its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said on Monday.
Typhoon Pepito made a second landfall on Sunday in Aurora after its first landfall in Catanduanes on Saturday. It exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility earlier today.
Aurora PDRRMO head Engr. Amado Egargue admitted that it will take time to restore electricity in the province due to the extensive damage sustained.
“Ang pinanggagalingan (ng kuryente) namin, sa Nueva Ecija pa,” said Egargue on 92.3 True FM’s Ted Failon & DJ Chacha. “Dumaraan (pa) ng Sierra Madre mountain ‘yung mga linya niyan.”
In Baler, around 80% of electric posts were toppled by Typhoon Pepito.
“Napakahirap ng signal sa aming lalawigan. Nagfa-fluctuate,” added Egargue.
Over 12,000 families or more than 35,000 individuals were in evacuation centers in eight municipalities in Aurora.
Dinalungan and Dipaculao sustained the most damage.
The Baler-Casiguran Road remained impassable due to landslides, uprooted trees, and toppled electric posts.
No casualties have been reported, as of writing.
A state of calamity could be declared in Aurora depending on the ongoing assessments by the PDRRMO, according to Ergague.
He added that the provincial government has already reached out to the administration for extra aid.
“Magkakaroon sila (Office of the Civil Defense) ng aerial viewing dito ngayon sa aming lalawigan para makita ‘yung extent ng damage,” said Ergague.
