(December 28, 2024) – There’s just something therapeutic about listening to music. Either you’re on the bus heading to school or work or you’re on your way home stuck in traffic.
You can’t help but find yourself looking out the window, imagining being in a music video. Then you start creating different scenarios, alternate universes, and romanticizing life in the Philippines (which is so hard, by the way).
Music will always have the power to bring people together, establish connections, and give that extra serotonin boost.
Music is that kind of friend that will always have your back. From your angsty or emo mood to main character moments to “Lover” era ala Taylor Swift, music is always there to feed your delulu self.
Here are five OPM hits that made Filipinos want to run to their favorite videoke spots in 2024.
5. Palagi – TJ Monterde feat. KZ Tandingan
Originally released by Monterde in 2023, the sweet ballad made a comeback this year with a version featuring his wife, Tandingan. Their perfect crooning together made the song even more romantic.
It was chosen as the official theme song for the much-awaited box office hit, “Hello, Love, Again,” starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards.
“Palagi” made the rounds on social media, with thousands of Filipinos using the song for their videos, tagging their significant others and perhaps their situationships too.
4. Babaero – Gins&Melodies feat. Hev Abi
Was Hev Abi included in your 2024 Spotify Wrapped too? Was it something you didn’t want to share? While some Filipinos acted surprised for having the popular rapper on their top artists list, most music lovers genuinely and proudly vibed with the music he put out.
Specifically, the song “Babaero” by Gins&Melodies, where he was featured, garnered millions of listens from the rap-loving community of the country.
It was a strong follow-up to “Alam Mo Ba Girl,” which was released in late 2023 and propelled Hev Abi to stardom this 2024.
3. Sining – Dionela feat. Jay R
“Pinsala’y ikinamada mo, binibining may salamangka. You’ve turned my limbics into a bouquet.”
We know what you’re thinking: What does limbics mean? Well, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, it’s a system of nerves and other structures in the brain that controls many of our emotions.
Love it or hate it, Dionela really has a way with words. The singer-songwriter swept thousands off their feet with his RNB hit, “Sining,” featuring Jay R. The message, yes, including the deep words, hit many in the feels. It didn’t hurt that Dionela could hit high notes too.
2. Dilaw – Maki
We all have people in our lives who bring joy, light, and calm in this chaotic world, and “Dilaw” by fast-rising OPM singer Maki perfectly captured what it’s like to be loved for who we are regardless of our past, mistakes, flaws, and imperfections. To have someone be there for you through it all. Just like the bright color yellow, the song embraced Filipinos with warmth and comfort.
The catchy tune, wholesome vibe, and hopeful lyrics made “Dilaw” a perfect anthem for people who never give up on love—hanggang sa ang buhok ay pumuti.
1. Pantropiko – BINI
Was there any surprise? From various covers to dance challenges to memes, “Pantropiko” made a big wave in the Filipino music scene and helped BINI finally rise to the top after years of being under the radar.
While it was released in November 2023, it only gained traction in early 2024 and eventually became a full-blown smash hit that gave everyone LSS or last song syndrome. “Pantropiko” made everyone feel like they’re on an island sipping buko juice while watching the waves dance.
We could’ve filled this list with five songs from BINI with the way they dominated the OPM scene this 2024. But definitely, “Pantropiko” takes the cake.
Now, that’s a wrap. Thank you for the music, 2024!
What’s your favorite OPM this year, Kapatid?
