(February 21, 2025) – A beggar was robbed of at least P15,000 in Barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City, after two suspects stole his bag and fled on an e-bike.
A CCTV footage showed an e-bike circling the area before a man disembarked and approached a group of resting beggars. Although the theft itself was not captured on camera, the suspects were seen escaping with the stolen bag.
Barangay officials attempted to chase the suspects but failed. The e-bike used in the crime was later found abandoned in another barangay.
Between P15,000 and P20,000 was stolen from the beggar.
“Sinabi ko nga na imposible ba na homeless siya, tapos may ganyan siyang kalaking pera? Sabi niya naman sa akin na matagal na raw niyang pinag-ipunan ang pera para lang may makakain sila,” said Clifford Niña, barangay captain.
Due to the incident, Niñal suggested placing numbers on the roofs of e-bikes in their area for identification purposes.
Before the incident, another theft was captured on CCTV in the same barangay. A man tried to steal a cellphone from a woman sleeping on an e-bike, but the phone was tied to her hand, preventing the first attempt.
The suspect left but returned shortly after successfully untying the phone and hiding it in his shorts. He was later arrested in a follow-up operation, but the cellphone was not recovered.
In a separate case on the night of February 19, another suspect posed as a customer in a store. While the store attendant’s back was turned, the rider took a cellphone and fled. The suspect remains at large.
“It’s unfortunate that these series of incidents sa nakawan are happening especially sa mga depressed area, but again we are just hopeful na these CCTV cameras that have been placed will help us determine that identify and description of the suspects,” said P/Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, spokesperson of Cebu City Police Office.
“Itong mga tao na may masamang balak, gusto kung ipaalam sa kanila na itong San Nicolas, proper equipped na kami ng mga CCTV, kung mahuhuli namin kayo sa akto, makita ang mga mukha ninyo, baka mapapahiya lang kayo, at makukulong pa,” Brgy. Captain Niñal said.
