(June 17, 2025) – Davao City 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte lambasted 1Sambayan coalition for warning other nations against hosting his father and former president Rodrigo Duterte in the event that he is granted interim release.
Congressman Duterte said the international community “is not blind” with the situation in the Philippines.
“May I remind [1Sambayan] that numerous countries have in fact lauded FPRRD in his crusade to combat crime in our country and I would not be surprised if many will express interest in receiving FPRRD in their respective country,” Rep. Duterte wrote on social media.
Congressman Duterte also maintained that his father merely used his authority to combat what he deemed to be problems in the country.
The ex-president sought for an interim release to an undisclosed country while facing accusation of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC), stemming from killings linked to his drug war policy.
1Sambayan, a coalition of opposition groups, earlier warned countries that receiving the former president would be a “betrayal” to justice and accountability.
“Granting refuge to a figure accused of such grave crimes would not only undermine the integrity of the ICC process, but would also send a dangerous message to other potential perpetrators of human rights abuses worldwide: that impunity is attainable,” said the group.
Atty. Kristina Conti, an ICC-accredited assistant to counsel who has been working with drug war victims, said that if the ICC grants Duterte’s request for interim release, he could be likely hosted in a European country who are parties to the Rome Statute, such as Belgium.
She noted that the host country would be far from the geographical scope of investigation in the Philippines, and close to the tribunal’s seat in the Netherlands.
“Ang hirap mag-speculate, pero ang ibabahagi ko ay kung ano na ‘yung historically naging bahagi, ano ‘yung mga bansang may agreement with the ICC when it comes to interim release. Isa doon ang Belgium,” Conti said in an interview with Ted Failon & DJ Chacha on Monday.
