(September 20 2022) – Canada’s International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Minister on Tuesday announced a P519 million grants to the Philippines in her visit to Manila this week.
Mary Ng, the first trade minister of any country to visit the country since the Marcos government came into power in July, said Ottawa was funding three projects in the Muslim region as well as in a climate change-related activity.
The Canadian’s initiatives focus on supporting the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen its climate finance mechanisms and achieve lasting peace and development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The projects will be undertaken by Canada’s Ministry of International Development led by Minister Harjit S. Sajjan, who is also responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.
The funding builds on the newly created Canadian $1 million Canada-ASEAN trust fund, which Ng announced at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting last month in Phnom Penh.
As part of Canada’s efforts to deepen its trade and investment with the Philippines, Ng put emphasis on a new Canadian partnership framework for international infrastructure development.
With President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s infrastructure investments in the Philippines, Canada is looking forward to helping build more roads, bridges, and hospitals while creating local jobs.
During her visit to Manila, Ng also highlighted the fact that Canada is home to nearly one million people of Filipino heritage, who make important contributions to Canadian communities.
She said Canada looks forward to deepening people to people ties and the trade and investment relationship between Canada and the Philippines, including through the negotiation of a free trade agreement with ASEAN and the Canada-Philippines Joint Economic Commission.
While in Manila, Ng also met with various Filipino business leaders, including women entrepreneurs and Jollibee’s chief executive officer, Ernesto Tanmantiong, to create additional opportunities for inclusive trade and investment, including in important sectors such as green technology, agriculture, and infrastructure. She also jad met with Masatsugu Asakawa, Asian Development Bank president.
