(August 25, 2021) – It appears that President Rodrigo Duterte running for vice president isn’t set in stone after all.
The Malacañang confirmed that Duterte’s possible candidacy remains contingent on the decision of his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, if she will run for president in the 2022 elections.
In his weekly briefing with Cabinet officials on Tuesday, Duterte said he will pull out from the race if his daughter seeks the highest government post. This, however, was cut out from the edited version that aired.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, in an interview on Radyo Pilipinas on Wednesday, said Duterte would give way “out of delicadeza” since it might not paint a good political image if he and his daughter both seek national office.
Duterte also allegedly said his long-time aide, Sen. Bong Go, would also give way to Duterte-Carpio to run for president. Go has yet to accept the nomination of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
“Should Sara decide to run, Bong Go is out. For my part, dahil delicadeza, hindi puwedeng dalawa kami riyan. If she runs, out na rin ako,” said Roque, quoting Duterte. “‘Yung pinakita sa Talk to the People ay ‘yung tinanong siya kung ‘di tatakbo si Mayor Sara, eh ‘di tatakbo siya.”

It came shortly after Duterte himself confirmed accepting his nomination to run as the PDP-Laban’s vice presidential bet, saying he would like to continue his crusade against criminality, drugs, and insurgency.
PDP-Laban secretary general Melvin Matibag denied Duterte will be the de facto president if he wins as vice president since he would only give a “strong moral compass” to help the new leader.
“What we’re really pushing is a party leadership. These people are strong personalities ng party, so we’re trying to develop that sense of leadership dito po sa atin,” said Matibag on One News’ The Chiefs.
Duterte-Carpio, meanwhile, has also received repeated requests from her small regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago, to run for president but she has not yet confirmed her decision. She plans to make an announcement in October although she has already started talking to political figures recently.
Duterte’s recent pronouncements could confirm the fears of another faction within PDP-Laban that claimed that the Go and Duterte tandem would only serve as a “smokescreen” for casting support on Duterte-Carpio.
“We’re in touch with our old guards and grassroots party-mates daily. The sentiment of most of our party-mates is that the tandem is merely a smokescreen for their real candidate, Mayor Sara Duterte,” said Ron Munsayac, who belongs to the wing led by ousted president Sen. Manny Pacquiao.
Many PDP-Laban members are at odds after some officials led the filing of a resolution pushing for Duterte’s vice presidential bid and allowing him to pick the party’s standard-bearer. Pacquiao told his members to ignore these political moves but it was ignored.
