April 30, 2020 – A portion of a carpark of a Makati high-rise residential condominium collapsed, but there was no casualty reported in the accident, a local police official said on Thursday.
Gideon Ines, the city’s deputy police chief, said a concrete slab of the carpark’s façade collapsed from the fifth level, crashing on the Nicanor Garcia Street, damaging three vehicles.
A loud explosion was heard in the area.
“Nasa tatlong sasakyan ang nasira pagkatapos mabagsakan ng pader,” Ines told a television interview. “Ang mga sasakyan ay papasok ng parking. May mga kotse na nayupi dahil nabagsakan ng pader. Mga tatlong sasakyan ang nabagsakan at nasira.”
Ines said the police is still investigating why the façade collapsed or what caused the accident.
About 300 people may have been affected, he said.
Tenants of the SM Development Corporation’s Jazz Residences said they heard a loud explosion and felt a minor tremor at about 10:58 in the morning.
Many residents fled their units despite strict “stay-at-home” orders from the government.
“Wala po tayong magagawa kasi for our safety, ‘yung structural ng building kailangan nilang tignan,” said John Madjus, a resident of Tower D, where the explosion supposedly took place.
SMDC management said residents were advised to stay near Metropolitan Avenue “as a safety precaution.” But Madjus speculated the explosion could have occurred at the building’s lower level, where generator sets and air conditioning units are located.
“Fourth to sixth floor, sumabog ‘yung generator,” he told reporters. “‘Yung explosion niya nag-cause na bumigay na ‘yung mga pader.”
This the second incident in two months involving SMDC properties after a slab of the facade wall of SM City Sta. Mesa in Manila collapsed and fell on a vehicle. (Rosabell Toledo/MM)
