(October 9, 2022) – Police officers on Sunday morning killed three men, including a notorious Abu Sayyaf member, who tried to escape from the national police’s custodial center and hold a former senator as a hostage, a spokesman said.
Brigadier General Roderick Augustus Alba said a police officer was also in critical condition when he was stabbed by the detainees with an improvised knife when they tried to escape from the custodial center inside Camp Crame.
Alba said former senator Leila de Lima, who is in her cell, was not harmed.
“Senator de Lima is now safe,” Alba said in a statement, adding all three detainees “were all neutralized.”
De Lima has been detained inside Camp Crame for the last five years after the previous administration linked her to a drug trade inside the national penitentiary. One of her three cases has been dismissed and two others are still on trial.
“Tension inside the detention facility has been defused and the situation has returned to normal while investigation is ongoing to review the security protocols inside the PNP Custodial Center,” Alba said.
The PNP Custodial Center has been holding high-profile criminals, terrorists and political prisoners. A former president, two senators and a Cabinet member under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr used to be detained in Camp Crame.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Rodolfo Azurin has ordered an “in-depth investigation” on the attempted escape of the three detainees.
Based on initial investigation, the three detainees were in an open courtyard basking under the sun at around 6:30 am on Sunday when they tried to escape by stabbing a police officer who was delivering food.
Another police officer noticed the commotion and tried to stop the three men but they stabbed Corporal Roger Agustin.
The responding police officer fired at the three men, hitting two – Arnel Cabintoy and Idang Susukan, a known Abu Sayyaf member.
The third one, Feliciano Sulayao, fled inside the detention center and held former senator de Lima as a hostage.
Police commandos went in and tried to negotiate but when Sulayao refused, he was shot dead when they saw an opportunity.
The police said the hostage drama ended around 7:18 am.
The scene of the crime operatives (SOCO) were called in to investigate while commandos from the Special Action Force (SAF) were deployed to secure the detention facility. (MM)
