(June 15, 2025) – Alas Pilipinas head coach Jorge de Brito on Saturday lauded his wards for trusting the process in their silver medal run for the Philippines in the 2025 AVC Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup.
It was the Philippines’ best finish in an AVC-sanctioned tournament since joining the confederation in 1961.
Despite absorbing a lopsided 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 beating at the hands of now three-peat champion Vietnam in the finals. De Brito hoped the country could keep the current roster as part of its long-term program to achieve international success.
“They [players] trust the process,” the Brazilian mentor said in an interview with One Sports. “They are really strong and they all keep their focus even if they are not performing good,” said De Brito.
De Brito furthered that his players’ unwavering attitude amid the adversities is crucial while representing the nation.
“[When] you play for the flag and also you show our character inside. It’s something that you have to grow and build for the team,” added De Brito.
The 58-year-old tactician led the Filipina spikers to a bronze medal in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup, rebranded as the Nations Cup. He has been coaching them since 2021.
Echoing De Brito, team captain Jia de Guzman expressed immense pride in the unexpected feat Alas Pilipinas has achieved in this year’s tourney.
“Mas nakaka-inspire lang talaga to go back to training, keep working together as a team, [and] to keep going for this long-term program kasi slowly but surely, umaangat tayo as a country sa volleyball,” the veteran playmaker said in a separate interview.

De Guzman won the Best Setter plum for the second straight edition.
Her teammates, Angel Canino and Dell Palomata, took home the Best Outside Hitter and Best Middle Blocker awards, respectively.
“Kung puwede nga lahat mabigyan ng award as in [because] everyone worked so hard in training. Kahit nung hindi pa kami nagte-training together, everyone is just really preparing for this national team period,” said De Guzman, noting other players from the national pool are ready to prove their worth in the Philippines’ upcoming tournaments.
