(May 23, 2025) – Big changes are coming to senior high school (SHS) starting this school year, as the Department of Education (DepEd) rolls out a revamped curriculum aimed at better preparing students for college and the workforce.
According to DepEd undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Gina Gonong, the updated curriculum will simplify the current system by cutting the number of SHS tracks from four to just two: academic and technical-professional.
“Kailangan nating gawing mas relevant at responsive ang ating SHS curriculum na nakaakma sa career aspirations ng mga mag-aaral natin,” Gonong said on One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas.
“Sa dating curriculum mayroon tayong four tracks. Ngayon sa bagong curriculum, two tracks na lang: academic at technical-professional track.”
She explained that in the old setup, students were limited to a fixed set of electives. But under the new system, they will have more freedom to choose subjects that match their interests and chosen career paths.
Another major change is the reduction of core subjects — from 15 to just five — to give students more room for elective classes. On-the-job (OJT) training, or work immersion, will also be expanded from the current 80-100 hours to as much as 320 to 640 hours.
“Dahil mas konti ang core subjects, mas may oportunidad ang bata na makakuha ng electives na kailangan niyang matutunan para mas maging handa sa kolehiyo at trabaho,” added Gonong.
Last month, DepEd released a 24-page consultation packet outlining the proposed changes. One of the highlights was the significant cut in core subjects, from 15 per semester to five per year, intended to make learning more focused and practical.
But not everyone is convinced.
A progressive group raised concerns, warning that the reforms could worsen existing problems in basic education, particularly in literacy.

They pointed to recent data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which found that nearly 19 million students who finished junior and senior high school in 2024 were functionally illiterate.
The PSA defines functional illiteracy as being able to read and write but struggling to use them in daily life.
