(May 24, 2025)- Several stakeholders in the education sector have expressed concern over Pres. Bongbong Marcos’ directive for his Cabinet members to submit their courtesy resignations.
Some fear it may affect preparations for the upcoming school year over possible removal of Sonny Angara as Education secretary.
The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition warned that this move could disrupt key reforms currently being implemented by Angara.
Among these are the adjustment of teachers’ working hours, reduction of class loads, and revisions to the senior high school (SHS) curriculum set to roll out in school year 2025–2026.
The group emphasized that Angara has been effectively managing the Department of Education (DepED) and that replacing him now could stall or derail ongoing programs.
They also suspect that political motives are behind the reshuffle and are calling on the President to prioritize the needs of the education sector.
The Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) echoed this sentiment. Executive Director Bal Camua highlighted the unprecedented collaboration between DepED and Technical Education And Skills Development Authority (TESDA) under the leadership of Angara and TESDA Director General Kiko Benitez.
He urged the President to reappoint both officials, citing the positive outcomes of their reforms and cooperation.
“Nakita namin na unprecedented ‘yung level of collaboration between the two agencies particularly because pareho silang seryoso in terms of making sure na kontektado ang basic education at higher education particularly sa skills training,” Camua said.
Teacher’s Dignity Coalition Chairperson Benjo Basas also expressed alarm: “We are approaching the start of the school year. If Secretary Angara is removed, we won’t know who to get instructions from. He’s leading these crucial reforms—his sudden removal could be damaging.”
Meanwhile, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Popoy de Vera is set to retire next year.
Groups hope the President will appoint a successor who will continue the reforms de Vera initiated.
In a statement, DepEd assured the public that Secretary Angara remains at work and is even scheduled to attend the opening of the Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos this week.
