(July 1, 2024) – Former president Rodrigo Duterte has said he has no plans to run in the upcoming elections despite previous statements from his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
Duterte made this clear during the “Maisug Rally” in Tacloban City, Leyte, where he appeared alongside his son, Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte on Sunday, June 30.
He advised not to take Vice Pres. Sara’s statements seriously that he and his children, Mayor Baste and Rep. Paolo Duterte, would run for the Senate in the upcoming elections, stressing that he is done with politics.
“Maniwala ka kay Inday. I-jamming ka nyan ng gusto. Lalo na pagbalabag ‘yung tanong. Sagutin ka ng balabag niyan. Hindi na ako babalik ng pulitika. Tapos na po ako. Laos na ako, wala na akong panggastos, wala na lahat. Saan ka nakakita at magsabi, tatay pati dalawang anak magtakbo ng Senado? Ano gawin namin sa Senate?,” the former president said.
When asked about their plans for the 2028 elections, he said he would leave it to God’s will.
At the rally, which was part of a National Day of Protest by his supporters, Duterte addressed several issues, including the acquittal of former senator Leila de Lima in her third and final drug case. He expressed respect for the court’s decision, describing it as evidence that democracy is functioning.
Responding to De Lima’s plan to file charges against him and others for her imprisonment, Duterte said, “Find your peace where you are now. Huwag kang kumalikot ng away kasi pagsisihin mo ‘yan. Anong babawiiin mo sa akin? Hindi naman ako nag-rock and roll?”
Duterte also dismissed concerns about a potential arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), reiterating that the Philippines is no longer a member of the ICC and thus outside its jurisdiction.
“They would insist that there is a case that would warrant my arrest. Then, hintayin ko. And I would like to see, ayaw ko ‘yung Pilipino na police o NBI magpunta sa harap ko. Gusto ko ‘yung ICC mismo, magdadala siya ng papel niya, warrant, kung sino man ‘yung de**** na ‘yun. Kasi pagbigay niya sa akin, ipapakain ko talaga sa kanya,” he said.
Former president Duterte also commented on Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s resignation from President Bongbong Marcos’ Cabinet, stating that she did not consult him before stepping down as Secretary of Education.
While Duterte was in Tacloban, his supporters held protests in Cebu, Davao, and Quezon City, with overseas Filipino workers in Hong Kong and Japan also joining in.
