(May 16, 2025) – A leader in the House of Representatives on Friday dismissed the argument that the impending impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio led to the defeat of most candidates of the administration in Mindanao.
Quezon Rep. Jayjay Suarez claimed that the majority of the lawmakers in the lower chamber who signed the ouster of Duterte-Carpio in February won in the midterm elections.
“‘Yung winning rate ng mga congressman na pumirma sa impeachment, I think that was at 86%. Sila talaga ‘yung dapat makaramdam kung meron man (kinalaman sa impeachment),” said Suarez, a deputy speaker.
On Thursday, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said those who initiated Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment should blame themselves for the defeat of the senatorial bets of Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas in Mindanao, instead of using him as a scapegoat.
Tiangco served as the campaign manager of the party backed by Sen. Bongbong Marcos Jr.
Only five of the administration-endorsed senatorial candidates won in Mindanao: Sen. Pia Cayetano, Sen. Lito Lapid, Rep. Erwin Tulfo, Ping Lacson, and Tito Sotto III.
Mindanao is considered a bailiwick of the family of Duterte-Carpio, who hail from Davao City.
Suarez also stressed that no one was offered money to sign Duterte-Carpio’s ouster.
“There is no truth to that allegation. There is no truth to that matter. No one was coerced. No one was asked to sign. Everybody signed the impeachment based on their own volition,” said Suarez, who was reelected.
Iloilo Rep. Lorenz Defensor, meanwhile, stressed that a change in the leadership in the House of Representatives could affect the upcoming impeachment trial of Duterte-Carpio, particularly if it doesn’t have an intent to pursue the matter.
“It will affect the degree of desire of the members of the House of Representatives who signed the impeachment complaint and the responsibility to present the evidence objectively,” said Defensor.
It came after rumors that House Speaker Martin Romualdez would be replaced. He and Marcos are cousins.
Romualdez was reelected as representative of Leyte.
Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment trial is set for July.
