(June 23, 2022) – Netizens are commenting on a Facebook post implying that Senator-elect Raffy Tulfo will provide P10,000 worth of cash aid for individuals who will sign up on a certain link.
The post is fake.
CLAIM:
The Facebook page “Bbm 31m Ayudamo,” which identifies itself as a personal blog, posted on June 13 a photo of Tulfo along with the text “10K ayuda.”
It urged netizens to message the page to know how to avail of the cash aid.
“Sa mga nabigyan na magshare pa para marami nag magpalista sa link,” wrote the caption.
RATING: Fake
FACTS:
No official announcement about any cash assistance was announced on the verified pages of Tulfo. Despite this, many were misled by the fake post as they shared their contact numbers in the comments. Some are even directly addressing Tulfo in their appeal for help.
Others added that they were “Solid BBM,” referring to the initials of President-elect Bongbong Marcos Jr.
The Facebook page also capitalized on the said initials while the “31m” seemingly refers to the number of votes Marcos received in the 2022 elections.
Tulfo, who ran as an independent candidate in his foray into politics, placed third in the senatorial race after garnering more than 23 million votes. His platform was anchored on helping reform the country’s justice system. In particular, the popular broadcaster said he would push for the expansion of the barangay justice system.
Erwin Tulfo, his younger brother, was recently appointed by Marcos as secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. He wants to increase the pension provided to indigent senior citizens to P1,500 to help fund their expenses for medicine and other important matters.
It was he who also floated the possibility of giving aid worth P12,000 to P14,000 via lump-sum distribution of the conditional cash assistance of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
Both Raffy and Erwin have been known to give cash dole-outs to their supporters. They, however, also faced controversies and issues over the past years.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
This is not the first time that the Facebook page shared the same kind of content. Aside from its post using Tulfo, it has shared many posts that promise free housing as long as its followers sign up through a provided link.
The commenters who are sharing their personal details such as their full name, phone number, and place of residence also risk exposing themselves to online scammers.
Last year, the National Privacy Commission warned the public against “smishing” or phishing through text messages. Many people complained about receiving unsolicited messages that contain fraudulent links.
The fake post of “Bbm 31m Ayudamo” has earned 449 reactions, 217 comments, and 313 shares, as of writing. The page has 10,875 likes and 11,910 followers.
