(May 12, 2022) – In a viral Facebook post, a quote card of Queen Elizabeth II showed that the British monarch has congratulated former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. who is leading in the partial and unofficial count of the 2022 presidential elections.
This claim is satire.
CLAIM:
The Facebook page Solid BBM Supporters on Thursday uploaded the quote card of Queen Elizabeth II which read:
“Today I wear red to express my congratulations to the Philippines’ President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. I know that he is a good leader. Unfortunately, the oligarchs are destroying his name, and the citizens just keep complaining,” said the quote card, dated May 11.
“Therefore, I can say, the Philippines doesn’t have the worst governance. It has the worst citizens,” the queen allegedly chastised Filipinos.
RATING: SATIRE
FACTS:
There were no reports of the longest reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, congratulating Marcos. Jr.
The queen turned 96 years old last month and has missed plenty of royal engagements since October 2021 due to her waning health and mobility issues.
There is also no ‘horbpQuirer.net’ website or ‘HORBP Files’ in existence. The latter’s slogan “SATIRE IS OUR BUSINESS” is written at the bottom right corner of along with a watermark that reads “SATIRE | NOT TRUE”.
The bogus organizations attributed could have been derived from the online news outlet Inquirer.net and the independent fact-checking body Vera Files in the Philippines. Neither of these reputable news organizations have reported about Queen Elizabeth II making such statements about the only son and namesake of the late dictator.
‘HORBP’ could be an acronym for “House of Representa-thieves Butasang Pambulsa,” a public Facebook group where members share political memes.
The photo of the queen wearing red, which is Marcos Jr.’s campaign color, was a flipped shot taken by Steve Parsons in May last year while visiting a naval base in Portsmouth, Britain.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Marcos Jr. is set to become the 17th president of the Philippines with a landslide win of more than 31 million votes based on the partial and unofficial count of the May 9 polls, restoring the family’s honor and power 36 years after his dictator father was ousted by the EDSA People Power uprising and almost 50 years since the imposition of martial law.
As of writing, the Facebook post has received over 1,100 reactions, 230 comments, and 427 shares. While the Solid BBM supporters Facebook page has 20,895 likes and 21,356 followers.
