(May 24, 2022) – A message has been going around on social media platforms claiming that a Supreme Court (SC) justice is “asking for prayers” in handling the disqualification case against leading presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
But the associate justice, Marvic Leonen, has disowned the claim, saying he has not asked anyone for prayers on the issue. The claim is false.
CLAIM:
A brief message is being forwarded in group chats and reposted on social media saying that SC Associate Justice Marvic Leonen is “asking for prayers” as he will “handle” the disqualification case against Marcos’ presidential bid.
“Justice Leonen is asking for prayers asap. He will handle the dq case of bbm. Lets storm heaven for Justice Leonen. Requesting prayer warriors. Please pass around,” the social media message read.
The message came after a group of Martial Law survivors elevated a petition against the only son and namesake of the dictator to the high court last week.
RATING: FALSE
FACTS:
The SC has yet to issue a statement on the disqualification case, but the high court is indeed expected to decide on the case en banc as required by Article VII, Section 4 of the 1987 Constitution.
But Leonen, although known for issuing dissenting opinions for various cases such as the dismissed petition to stop the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., on Monday said he has not actually asked for prayers over the disqualification case.
“Suddenly getting messages from friends that they are praying for me. Apparently there is fake news going around that I am asking for prayers from everyone. Those who know me know my beliefs. Also, I am well po,” Leonen said on Twitter.

Please do not believe everything you get from group chats.

I know you mean well. But kindly be critical about what you send to others. Just because you receive a message that you want to believe it does not make it true.
When you repost unvalidated information, you participate in disinformation
I did not ask for prayers from everyone

WHY THIS MATTERS:
Despite Leonen’s clarification, the message continues to spread on social media. One Facebook post saw 186 reactions, 83 comments, and 43 shares, while another Tweet with nearly the same content received 224 likes, 11 replies, and 60 retweets.
