(December 23, 2022) – A Youtube video claimed that a bomber aircraft of the United States (US) invaded North Korea in retaliation for the latter’s missile launches.
This claim is false.
CLAIM:
On December 21, Youtube channel “Ella Vloggs” posted a video titled: “24 ORAS EXPRESS SOUTH KOREA AT AMERICA BOMBER BUMANAT NA PART4 ! NORTH PILIPINAS VINES NEWS VIRAL”
The two-minute video showed military airplanes with text overlay saying: “Breaking news North Korea bumanat ng unlimited missile sa South Korea,” “Makikita sa video USA bomber at South sabay lumusob sa North Korea,” and “America bomber at South fighter jet niyanig ang North.”
RATING: FALSE
FACTS:
A reverse image search showed that the clip used in the video came from the South Korean Ministry of Defense and was used by several broadcasts, including Arirang News and MBCNEWS.
The original video was taken last December 20 during a combined aerial exercise by South Korea and the US.
The US sent a B-52 bomber and F-22 stealth fighters for the drills while South Korea deployed F-35 stealth jets and F-15K fighter jets.
The aerial exercise followed North Korea’s missile launches on December 18.
The missile launches were “strongly condemned” by South Korea but no attacks have been reported.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Since the 1950s, South Korea and North Korea have been engaged in a long-standing conflict.
In 1953, a demilitarized zone was established as a buffer between the two countries along with a truce, but not a peace treaty.
The tension has heightened in recent years with the rule of North Korean President Kim Jong-un, who has been developing and testing nuclear weapons despite international sanctions.
Still, South Korea, along with its allies like the US, has repeatedly expressed that it has no plan to attack or invade North Korea.
False information on wars, nuclear threats, and weapons of mass destruction can be traced back to operations during the Cold War.
But with the power of social media, fake stories can now spread much quicker and have dire consequences that include muddying public debate, causing confusion, and even sowing panic.
Since it was uploaded, the video has gained 26,083 views, 229 likes, and 40 comments. The channel has 283,000 subscribers and 60,704,988 total views since being created on February 15, 2019.
