(September 5, 2022) – Teachers have continued to bear the brunt of challenges in the first two weeks of face-to-face classes due to the lack of a solid plan for the learning recovery of students after two years of online learning, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said on Sunday.
ACT chairperson Vladimer Quetua stressed that teachers merely improvised learning assessments due to the lack of a proper guide from the Department of Education (DepEd). He pointed out that many students were “generally quiet and withdrawn” given the wide difference between physical and remote classes.
“The past two weeks have been used up on orientation meetings as there is no clear guide on how teachers can jumpstart their lessons given that there are wide learning gaps that need to be addressed,” said Quetua.
Last month, many students returned to their classrooms after years of making do with the online setup due to the COVID-19 crisis. The government insisted that the country was already ready for the return of face-to-face classes but persisting concerns have been reported, such as the insufficiency of classroom supplies.
While the DepEd, which is headed by Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, conducted seminars, Quetua said the suggested psycho-social activities for students were not appropriate for the setup of many schools.
He also noted the problems brought about by the recent typhoon and monsoon rains over the past two weeks. In particular, he said teachers in Tacurong High School in Sultan Kudarat even had to drain their classrooms of the flood.
Many teachers also continue to struggle with their heavy load apart from their ancillary duties. Quetua stressed that the lack of non-teaching personnel assigned to do these tasks have forced many teachers to take them on, adding to their already frantic schedules.
Various organizations have repeatedly called for better working conditions for teachers due to the difficulties they have continued to face even before the COVID-19 pandemic. A higher salary within the same range as that of other service workers in the government has also been consistently sought.
“We are still waiting for game-changing measures that the current administration can commit to and implement to alleviate our learners and teachers of our dire situation,” said Quetua.
