(January 30, 2024) – The rising tension between the families of President Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio was expected due to the “lack of substance” of the UniTeam, a political analyst said on Monday.
Ronald Llamas, the political adviser of the late former president Noynoy Aquino III, previously noted that an “open warfare” between the Marcoses and the Dutertes was bound to happen this year.
“Ang problema sa UniTeam, wala namang substance, wala namang platform, wala namang principles, wala namang vision. ‘Di ko nga sigurado kung merong friendship. Pero usually, if you use a slogan na unity, dapat malinaw kung ano ‘yung pinagkakaisahan,” said Llamas on One News’ The Big Story.
During the campaign for the 2022 elections, the UniTeam was criticized for not presenting concrete platforms, as Marcos heavily focused on the concept of unity in many of his speeches.
“Para siyang (UniTeam) hot air balloon na walang laman kaya ang daling sumabog. Ako, inaasahan kong sasabog ‘yan kasi walang laman,” said Llamas.
The escalating tension was recently seen following the rival rallies last Sunday. Marcos led the launch of his Bagong Pilipinas slogan in Manila while former President Rodrigo Duterte led the anti-charter change rally in his bailiwick in Davao City.
Duterte, who’s known for his profanity-laden speeches and reckless remarks, accused Marcos of being a “drug addict.” In response, Marcos laughed it off and said Duterte’s alleged fentanyl intake may have affected him.
Also, Duterte’s son, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, directly called on Marcos to resign if he does not have any love or aspiration for the Philippines.
“You are lazy and you lack compassion,” said the younger Duterte. “He is putting politics first, the self-preservation of their political lives. They are not doing their jobs first.”
Duterte-Carpio said her brother was “coming from a place of brotherly love” because of the “despicable treatment” she’s allegedly getting from “some sectors within the circle of the president.”
Llamas said the turn of events is not surprising because the cracks showed swiftly after Marcos assumed the presidency. Even before teaming up for the 2022 elections, there were reports that Duterte-Carpio wanted to run for president but gave way to Marcos.
“Makikita mo na ang grumblings, cracks, at sumabog nga ‘yan noong pumutok ang issue ng attempt na coup against (House) Speaker Martin Romualdez at natanggal si Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo as senior deputy speaker. Diyan na nangyari ang defining moment ng tambaloslos,” added Llamas.
Romualdez is a cousin of Marcos.
Amid the infighting, opposition groups urged the public to “reject the dynasty war” of the Marcoses and the Dutertes because their bickering does not represent the interests of the people.
“Ang unity natin, hindi unity ng mga makakapangyarihang pamilya na may agenda, kundi unity ng ordinaryong mamamayan na nagmamahal sa ating bansa,” said Sen. Risa Hontiveros.
