(July 1, 2020) – The country’s national police force on Wednesday took back its earlier statement about the killing of four soldiers at the hands of local police officers in Jolo as a “misencounter.”
Police spokesman Brigadier General Bernard Banac said there was no exchange of fire that took place near Jolo town hall in the southern Philippines on Monday.
The retraction was meant to defuse the tension slowly building up between military and police forces, with an enraged Army chief, Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay, describing the incident as a rubout.
Earlier today, Defense chief Delfin Lorenzana seemed to mediate between the military and police, saying it is too early to speculate as both sides have conflicting reports.
But he said someone has to be held accountable on the incident.
“Whilst there is the principle of command responsibility, it must be carefully determined how high in the hierarchy should be accountability be. It has to stop somewhere,” Lorenzana, a retired military general, told reporters.
National police chief General Archie Gamboa said the police’s relationship with the armed forces will not be strained by the incident, which he said was an isolated case.
He appealed for calm amid speculation “that tend to erode the police-military unity driving a wedge” between Sulu police and the 11th Infrantry Division of the Army.
“I have complete faith in the competence and professionalism of NBI to establish the facts and answer all questions that will uncover the truth behind this tragedy,” he said in a statement.
Gamboa has identified the cops involved on the killing of the soldiers and has said all are now detained and disarmed at the provincial police office in Sulu.
The soldiers were said to be tracking down suspected bombers from the pro-Islamic State militant group Abu Sayyaf in Jolo when they were shot dead in broad daylight by nine police officers.
The slain soldiers, who were given a heroes’ welcome in Manila, were identified as Major Marvin Indammog, Captain Irwin Managuelod, Sergeant Jaime Velasco, and Corporal Abdal Asula. (Christian de Lano Deiparine/MM)
