(July 5, 2024) – Sen. Bong Go on Friday declined to comment on Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio’s recent revelation that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, and her two brothers will all run for senator in the 2025 midterm elections.
When asked about the matter, Go, a close ally of Duterte, distanced himself.
“Ayaw ko na magbigay ng komento tungkol diyan,” said Go on One PH’s Sa Totoo Lang. “Desisyon ng pamilya ‘yan, at karapatan ng bawat Pilipino na tumakbo kung sino man.”
Last week, Duterte-Carpio claimed that her father, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, and Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte are all “raring to run” for senator in next year’s midterm elections.
The former president, however, denied this during a rally in Tacloban, Leyte last Sunday, saying his daughter was not serious about her announcement.
“Maniwala kayo kay Inday?” said Duterte, refering to his daughter’s ninckname. “Saan ka nakakita, tatay tsaka dalawang anak tatakbo (bilang senador)? Huwag kayong kumagat kay Inday kasi ‘yan si Inday, kagaya ko rin ‘yan.”
Duterte is notorious for making reckless remarks and contradicting his own statements.
Go, however, said he would welcome it if the Dutertes indeed vie for seats in the upper chamber.
“Sabi nga ni Sen. Bato (Dela Rosa), mas masaya na may mga kasama kami dahil sa ngayon, kakaunti lang kami,” said Go. “The more, the merrier kung saka-sakaling marami pang tatakbo. This is a democracy. Bigyan natin ng karapatan ang taumbayan (piliin) kung sino ang gustong nilang manungkulan.”
Go and Duterte, meanwhile, are facing plunder charges after former senator Antonio Trillanes IV filed a complaint against them before the Department of Justice due to alleged anomalies in infrastructure projects in Davao City.
Trillanes claimed that the construction firms of Go’s father and half-brother were constantly given government projects after Duterte approved an increased budget in the Davao Region in 2017.
Go simply dismissed Trillanes’ move.
“Naging tradisyon na niya manira tuwing nalalapit ang election. Parang naging negosyo na niya,” said Go.
