(September 30, 2024) – Sen. Imee Marcos on Monday maintained that she has no ill will toward her brother, Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr., despite bolting from his newly formed political alliance.
Imee said her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2025 midterm elections allows her to speak with different political parties without being tied to a single coalition.
“Sabi ko (sa nanay ko) mas maganda naman (ito) para sa pamilya, para sa kabutihan ng lahat,” said Imee, referring to former first lady Imelda Marcos. “Para nakakausap natin ang lahat ng sektor. Meron tayong daan na makisuyo sa iba’t ibang panig.”
She added that it was also aided by the values instilled by her father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
“‘Yun naman ang turo ng aking ama: Isang bansa, isang diwa. Huwag tayo magkawatak-watak,” said the reelectionist senator.’
Last September 26, Marcos Jr. unveiled the 12 senatorial candidates, including Imee, of Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas—the alliance of his Partido Federal Pilipinas and House Leader Martin Romualdez’s Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats. Romualdez is a cousin of the Marcoses.
Imee, however, withdrew, saying she doesn’t want to be caught in the rift between his brother and Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio, which emerged after the dissolution of the UniTeam.
Imee is a known ally of Duterte-Carpio.
“‘Yan naman ang turo ng tatay ko,” stresed Imee. “Baka malagay pa sa alanganin (ang kapatid ko) at ‘yung mga kaibigan ay masaktan. (Kaya mas) maigi nang tumayo ako mag-isa kahit napakahirap.”
Marcos Sr. held on to the presidency for two decades by imposing Martial Law. His authoritarian rule was marked by human rights abuses, corruption, cronyism, and his family’s accrual of ill-gotten wealth.
He also silenced the opposition and controlled the media to monopolize the political landscape.
Moreover, he blatantly cheated in the 1986 snap elections, which led to more public discontent and eventually, the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Despite leaving her brother’s coalition, Imee left the door open for future involvement, touting the vision of the UniTeam.
“It’s a tremendous sacrifice to stand alone. But I need to be free to cross the line, to talk to all parties, and to get things done,” added Imee.
